Your reference in most cases is going to be written by you head of year, personal tutor, or someone who knows you very well. The majority of universities specify that the reference has to be written by an academic reference and thus has to be written by someone who knows you from an academic standpoint.
The UKCAT is a 2 hour long exam which is used by medical schools to help them select the most able students for admissions. This test was introduced because of the surge in medical admissions over the past years. In some situations medicals schools had 3000 to 4000 students competing for 300 places. As a result medical schools had difficulty in picking out the top candidates as there were many students who all meet the criteria for admitance.
