Medical Personal Statement Example:1

My interest in the art of medicine manifested itself from a childhood fascination into the workings of the human body. This fascination gradually developed into a passion for science and led me to undertake a degree in genetics. Throughout my degree I have found the rapid developments in the area of genetics and their implications in the world of medicine captivating. The altruistic nature of a career in medicine and the day to day challenges involved in such an interdisciplinary career appeal to me greatly.

To truly test my aspiration for a career in medicine I sought to gain medical experience. I initially secured a placement at the(hospital) shadowing various members of the healthcare team. On my first day I witnessed an Oncologist diagnose a patient with ovarian cancer, and instantly learnt that the field of medicine can be emotionally challenging. During my ward rounds I learnt the importance of communicating accurately and compassionately to all patients and understood the significance of team work between all members of the health care team. My first theatre experience was extremely insightful; furthermore I was amazed to hear music played during the procedure. Throughout my placement I witnessed the physical and emotional challenges doctors face on a daily basis but the experience confirmed that medicine is definitely the career for me.

In order to further nourish my thirst for medical experience I volunteered for 4 months at a local nursing home. I immediately discovered that this was a role that requires a great deal of compassion. My position involved assisting residents in performing everyday activities, In addition to providing them with my friendship. My time at the nursing home allowed me to appreciate the importance of palliative care. In order to gain an insight into the primary healthcare team. I participated in a week long placement at a local pharmacy, dispensing medicine and assisting customers. I am very inquisitive by nature and would use the BNF to help improve my understanding of drug treatment. During my placement I encountered various scenarios’ which emphasised the importance of accurate communication between different healthcare professionals.

I have been volunteering since September 2007 at the hospital working within the — clinic. My position involves providing information and support to —— impaired patients; the importance of empathy in this role became immediately evident from a very early stage. I am currently in the process of securing a 4 month long placement at the (hospital) as a ward volunteer. I am eager to gain an understanding of the differences and similarities that exist between distinct NHS hospitals and hope the experience will further cultivate my interest in medicine.

In January 2007 I took up the role of special constable. This position has allowed me to further develop my core skills. During the second year of my degree I was elected to represent genetic students on the biomedical school committee putting forward any student concerns to the faculty and discussing them further. I am also a member of the —- committee and have actively been involved in events to help raise awareness for —–. I am fully aware of the importance of participating in various recreational activities to help cope with the daily demands of a career in medicine. I enjoy playing team sports like football and cricket on a weekly basis and find them extremely therapeutic. I am also a keen pigeon fancier and breeder with a particular interest in Birmingham rollers, I find this hobby extremely rewarding and relaxing.

Throughout my medical experiences I have witnessed the many stresses and challenges doctors face on a daily basis, but this has not deterred me. It has only deepened my commitment to this profession that I truly aspire. I look forward to the challenges that lay ahead.
